A little late I hear you cry? Well you’d be correct! But I still need to post about Christmas dresses don’t I ☺
I’ve never before worn a red dress…Nor red in general really. I thought because I have light/blonde-ish/bronde hair that it wouldn’t look right. Perhaps it’s down to my skin tone; either way, the first time I got one was for my fella’s work’s Christmas ‘Do’, of which in the end was just for employees, but nonetheless, I thought I’d wear the dress on Christmas Day anyway. It turns out that our Christmas Day in New York was MUCH too cold for that malarkey, and we ended up strolling through Central Park anyway, so wouldn’t have been very practical. I did however wear the dress on two vacation occasions. The first time was to see The Radio City Christmas Spectacular: The Rockettes! (Worn with thick black tights)

And the second time was minus the tights; to dinner at the wonderfully vegan; Candle 79, just off of Lexington Avenue, where we stayed during our trip.
(That dish is the all vegan; Chili-grilled Seitan, sautéed chard, quinoa pilaf with avocado salad. You can buy the Candle 79 cookbook online; I definitely recommend it, it’s the best food I’ve ever tasted!)
The dress, I fell in love with immediately, I saw it and thought; “You know what, I’m going to try this red dress on and just see”. And I’m really glad I did, because it’s changed my opinion of bold block colours; red especially. I hope that maybe this post does that for you too. To try out a new colour that you’ve always avoided, maybe try a new cut that you assumed never suited you.
This particular dress is from River Island. It didn’t come with a belt, nor loop holes to add your own, however on the evening I wore it out for dinner, I teamed it with a skinny belt along the tailored waist, which was slightly high, but I think worked quite well.
When I tried it on I opened the dressing room door to show my fella; and was pleasantly surprised that he liked it too. He calls it my ‘Zooey DesChanel dress’ – how can you not love that!
The only thing that I wished on it, was sleeves – three-quarter length sleeves; to make it a little more professional; or appropriate for different settings, as teaming it with a little jacket didn’t really look very good, and as the fit is very retro and boxy on the torso, it makes you look very square when you don’t show your arms.
