13 Nov

At Katara Cultural Village; the Art Center(re) specifically; tonight you will find the launch of the ‘Common Thread’ pop up shops; an exclusive trunk show featuring 16 local artists and designers, each of whom designs or makes their own products.

According to the Gulf Times; designers participating in this month’s trunk show include Cala Mari, Fufi Design, Dana Jewelry, two4joy, Common Thread, Moda Key, Twenty30Forty, Nikki Newman, Roqaya al-Thani, Selina Farooqi, Ardoin Collection, Michella, Gabi, White Stain, Giovanile, Veil Art and Dana Riad.

I aim to get my own Boutique: ‘Tribe of Mannequins’ up and running by the next trunk show, where I shall be showcasing my jewelry collection and wares.

I am currently working on the branding and website; I already have stock ready to go!

This blog, of the same title will then be the sister blog to the products website.

Here is a top secret, sneak peek of some of my collection/s for my boutique’ Tribe of Mannequins. I also am working on my cute pieces with themes; such as ‘Fairytale’, which, for example – are chunky necklaces featuring castles, carriages and princesses on them.

And of course a range of cupcake related pieces.

There are also larger pieces such as clutch bags and some other surprises, yet to come – so stay tuned!

Some special beads I sourced personally in Thailand ready to custom create pieces with, some rings and knuckle-duster rings:

Katara Art Centre launched in 2011, it’s aim being to foster and and encourage creativity. The Art Centre has provided gallery spaces for several successful exhibitions including Desine Espoir, which brought together the biggest names in fashion for a humanitarian project.

Designers included Jean-Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Lanvin, Viktor & Rolf, Yves Saint Laurent and Emmanuel Ungaro *drooool!* – two of my favourites there!

I am very much looking forward to heading on down there and meeting local creatives, networking and eyeballin’ all the eye candy on offer – clothes, bags, custom, one of a kinds, wheee! :)

A blog-spot post I came across earlier led me to Les Cherubins; who showcased some handmade crafts in May 2012. Check these cuties out!: http://les-cherubins.blogspot.com/2012/05/common-thread-pop-up-boutique.html

I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to wear down to the trunk show all day! I wish I had my branding for the boutique up and running as I’d love to bring some business cards with me; but hey-ho. I’m donning some of my own designs and usually when people ask me where I got something from, I can tell them! It’s wearing your own billboard, in the form of a jacket/ring/bag – perfect!

This is what I’ve decided on wearing:

  • - Yellow peplum half sleeve top
  • - Orange ‘Hand of Hamsa/Fatima’ rosary bead style necklace; from my collection ‘Tribe of Mannequins’,
  • - All rings from my boutique: ‘Tribe of Mannequins’.
  • - All bracelets from my collection: ‘Tribe of Mannequins’.
  • - Black standard leggings
  • - Black boots
  • - Black studded shoulder ‘Kayley’ jacket from Celeb Boutique, USA. (I have purchased many studs like this now so shall be custom-making pieces featuring them).
  • Pink large Chanel quilted bag, with added ‘Paul’s Boutique’ keychain.
  • My Canon EOS 60D!

The Pompadour/bouffant Ponytail!

26 Feb

I LOVE wearing a Pompadour/bouffant! I wear it with the rest of my hair down, I wear it as a faux-hawk, I wear it with a side plait/braid, I wear it with a bun, I wear it with hair clips, I wear it low, I wear it high, I wear it messy, I wear it neat, I’ll wear it all day long!

It’s easy to do (bar the odd ‘bad hair day’ where it seems to take you an hour to get your hair right).

I’ve always called it my ‘ice-cream’, it reminds me at times of a Mr. Whippy! Although now, vegan soy ice-’cream’ :)!

The bouffant was a mainstream hairstyle in the mid-to-late 18th century in western Europe. And according to Wikipedia; it was thought to be created for Marie Antoinette, as she had relatively thin hair and wanted to create the illusion of having very full hair.
I hear ya Marie!

In modern times, the bouffant was popular in Western culture in the 1960s, when it was created with the help of back-combing and large amounts of hair spray. Again, according to Wikipedia; the modern bouffant is considered to have been invented by Raymond Bessone.

Modern:

The style that I’m posting about has many similarities to the Pompadour also. The Pompadour takes its name from Madame de Pompadour.

Step-by-step

Pompadour hair style tips

- Rule number one thing you should do if you want to create this hair style: do not wash your hair first. You must wait at least about 24 to 48 hours to not wash your hair before arranging this hair style.
- Start by combing the hair towards the back. Then take the ‘fringe/bangs’ part/front of the hair, pull and comb underneath toward the back with a fine toothed comb.
- Push the hair part was toward the front of your head and flops with a hairpin to be strong. Place the hairpin on both sides of the hair.
- Then, finish by spraying hairspray to hair look more tidy.

The Half-Moon Manicure: Part 2

26 Feb

Following on from Part 1 of the main post: The Half-Moon Manicure (dated 12th February 2012); I decided I had to try it out! So feel free to check out my visual reference guide below!
I opted for a Dita Von Teese-esque vintage style: red with natural half-moons! I have, however – modernised it, and put a custom take on a classic look, by opting for square tips opposed to pointed.
One reason for this was fear of poking ones eyeball out, or indeed someone elses! Another reason was paranoia that could’t get the points to be rounded at each side semetrically.
And mainly, because I prefer squarer tips…Probably relating back to point 1…Fear of poking ones eyeball out.
So you see, either way – it’s a classic style, funky and often sophisticated.
Since I have been wearing it, I definitely feel more womanly/lady-like.
I don’t think a lot of people ‘get it’. They probably think I just have a red tipped french manicure, Jersey-shore style. Perhaps the rounded/pointy tips would have aided that. Nevertheless, I really like this style and definitely recommend trying it out!

Ombre Hair

9 Feb

Wearable gradiants have been well-liked on clothing for a few seasons now, but the trend has recently crossed over into the beauty world. Ombre hair is a chic look for fall, spotted on celebs, runway models, and fashionistas of all types.
But wait…What on earth does Ombre mean? I hear you cry:
The word ‘ombre’ is a French word that implies ‘shaded’. In order to achieve ombre hair color, balayage technique is mostly adopted. This colouring technique emerged in Paris in the 1970s; the word “balayage” is French for “to sweep,” a reference to the way in which the color is applied. Balayage became extremely popular in the late 1990s. In the United States, you may see balayage spelled “balliage.”

Here is Jessica Simpson sporting the older version. Lighter top and darker as the hair goes down.
I actually LOVE this on her. I’ve copied this many times.

What is Ombre hair?
Ombré is a huge hair trend right now, as seen on celebs like Rachel Bilson, Lauren Conrad, and Jessica Biel. Instead of starting highlights at the top of your head, this style incorporates lighter colored streaks around the bottom of your tresses.

Celebrities do Ombre
The dark-roots-to-pale-ends look can be as natural or drastic as you want. A subtle look like Rachel Bilson’s is more natural than Lady Gaga’s platinum-to-yellow ombre ‘do or Ashlee Simpson-Wentz’s brown-to-red style. It’s fantastic that this trend is versatile enough to work for any girl with any hair colour.

Ombre hair sometimes gets confused with dip-dyed hair:

Or Two-Tone Hair:

When the celebrity hair world went ombre last year, we predicted a flash trend, dying out (pardon the pun) after a summer of two tone hair hues. But 18 months later the look is still going strong, and the balayage technique, used to create this look, is still one of the most popular hair colouring requests for autumn/winter 2011.

My most favourite Ombre look right now is on Drew Barrymore! My oh my, her hair looks beautiful!:

Sally Hershberger colourist Erin Bogartworks shares her tips for getting the look!

Prep with a good cut: Get your hair cut first — lighter ends show off the swingy movement of great layers. If your haircut has lost its shape, the look won’t be complete. As a general rule, it’s best to start the Ombré highlights at around chin level. The color should only be in the last two or three inches of each hair layer.

Best hair texture and length for the look: Ombré can work for most textures and looks best on medium to long hair with layers.

Maintenance: Colour-safe shampoo and conditioner, and the occasional deep-conditioning treatment. Use a leave-in conditioner to keep light ends healthy
Tones your colourist should incorporate: This depends on your personal style. If you’re more conservative, ask for natural-looking, sun-kissed ends. If you are looking for more drama, opt for dark roots with very light ends. In the winter, when tans start to fade, warmer tones are more flattering against paler skin. Spring is the perfect time to add brighter pieces around your face.

COLOURS

If you’re brunette, but don’t want to go too light at the ends/mid length of your hair for Ombre. Don’t worry – there’s a different way for you!:

So there you have it!…Wait, what? You’re still not convinced?
Not even by all of the pretty pictures?
I don’t believe you.

Okay, well then there are some reasons to go Ombre:

• Ombre is an easy way to grow out your roots (this alone sells it to me!)
• Ombre is a low-maintenance hair colour technique. (Sold, again!)
• Ombre is an anti-aging hair colour trick. (Yes, please) PS – This means, it mimicks your nature hair colouring as a youth, darker to lighter.
• Ombre is fun and on trend. Wheee!

Denim…Again?

21 Jul

Denim.

Ah, denim, denim, denim.

If you weren’t a fan of the 2010 denim trend (you couldn’t have missed it…Dungaree’s everywhere!), then you may not be a fan of 2011’s double denim.

This year had a lot of diversity with denim outlines with the return of the boot cut jean and the revisiting of the 70′s Boho Chic, think fringed bags and waistcoats. Although…Thinking in terms of celebu-tant, it never really left.

Here’s a list of Denim’s I’ve seen around lately, and next to the items I shall give my swift opinion; simply as a yes or no.

Denim sweatpants – I’m sorry, what? Denim sweatpants?? No!

Elastic denim cuffs – Why would you…I…No!

Denim Leggings – Noo! Although some funky waifs could probably get away with them. On the other hand, these could work.

Rolled cuffs; jeans and jackets – Yes! Tre chic. (Also, if you are…’Vertically challenged’ like moi, rolled up jeans are a must!)

Cargo Jeans – Oh yes! The bigger the pockets, the better! I’m wearin’ a pair right now! Comfort-a-rama.

Low-rise denims – Yes! My favourites! Difficult to pull off, quite literally sometimes! Better skip a large lunch to avoid the muffin top. I always make sure I have a long cardigan with me whilst donning a pair of these badboys. Cover up that surprise uncomfortable bloat after breakfast, grr).

High-waisted – Yes! Can look unflattering on the thighs though, but they are definitely practical.

Denim Shorts – Yes! Definitely yes! Ooh, frayed please! Sure, they’ll make us feel self-conscious; so I say – let’s look at lengths! I’ve been keeping an eye out…Both eyes in fact, for a cool pair of jean shorts, whilst they also send me on the memory train to childhood; I’d opt out of the knee length ones (not right for my height) and look for chopped off, messy, frayed shorts – not too thigh skimming though – only for the beach! I’m keepin’ my ‘orange peel’ away from the general public, I’m kind like that! : )
According to Denimology.com; Rachel Bilson’s denim cutout shorts are TopShop! I like the idea of adding the chain belt to dress them down.
TopShop’s ‘Frayed Denim Hotpants’ in Mid Stone with Studs, the brand sold out of these popular shorts that they did this season both with and without studs.

http://www.denimology.com

Bell Bottoms – YES! Definitely! All I would wear for like…At least four years was jean flares (bell bottoms). I love them. They are both extremely flattering on a slightly bottom-heavier figure, they are funkaaay!
(To my American readers; we British mean ‘funky’ to be ‘cool, rad, groovy) not funky as in ‘a bad smell’. I had a conversation with an American girl a while back, where I incorporated the word ‘funky’ – something I say quite often it seems. This was met with a strange look and a “Funky? Urgh, what?”…Followed with my Brit-US translation) Haha : )

I picked up an awesome jean jacket as Stradivarius in The Dubai Mall on the weekend. It makes me feel old-school! It’s has a slight twist to the one I wore at school however, which freshens the style – Epaulettes , military-style!

Stradivarius always have a wearable selection of jackets…Especially in Autumn (Fall) – Winter…And the chunky knit scarves! Don’t get me started on the chunky knit scarves! Breathe, breaaathe. OK. Where was I…Yes, Jackets:

Great to wear with jeans. Tough material. Very Wintery.

Gorgeous layered look. A favourite.

http://www.stradivarius.com/

What are YOUR views on the return of denim? Will you be sporting elasticated denim pants to work? Maybe you’ve already purchased a pair of denim jeggings/leggings and wouldn’t be seen without them?
Maybe your friend is embarrassing you by doublin’ up on the ol’ denim trend and fashioning a denim shirt on top with denim cargo pants…But in a way, it kinda works? We here at Tribe of Mannequins are interested in YOUR opinion :)

Office wear haul (my 40th post!)

18 Jul

As Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) is currently on until the end of the month, I took advantage this past weekend by taking a trip around a few local malls to find…Specifically, office/work/meetings attire.

I have been on the hunt for a new blazer for quite some time now; the last one I purchased at Splash, a low-mid quality one, not great material, a nice dark grayish colour, but very long, and very skinny/shrunken style.
My favourite one before that was one I got from River Island, with puffed up shoulder sleeves and a curled back on it, very cute.
(picture appears in my post on 30 March: ‘Why I haven’t posted in a while…’)

But I wanted some new work attire and nowhere stocked it like H&M this past weekend, wow!
Mall of the Emirates

Dubai Mall

and Ibn Battuta

…are three of the malls I visited, and Ibn Battuta is where I found my star buys!

I picked up some great items!

Some items I am still on the lookout for:
Black comfortable shoes – court/rounded toe, no peep tops, higher than kitten heel, but NOT as high as what’s currently being stocked in River Island for example. I saw the most BEAUTIFUL shoes, multi-coloured sparkles, stripper-esque high shoes, my foot hurt just after I tried it on for a minute or so, but I want a very practical and wearable shoe.

Flicking through Grazia this morning, I noticed a pair of peep-toe Louboutins that looked almost identical – bare the red underside of course, and slightly dulled colour:

I also saw a fantastic Alexander McQueen inspired shoes in New Look! Studded back details, I wanted them! But again, I stopped myself and concentrated on the fact that I couldn’t walk appropriately in them! Haha
At the moment I have two favourite office wear shoes – a pair of nude court shoes, rounded toes, flat studs around the back heel, gorgeous. Looked similar to these but not as many spikes, unfortunatly:

(Pictures taken from my previous post ‘Awe – an inspired look book: TopShop’ on July 20 2010)
- Incidently, I ended up purchasing that white shirt dress in the corner of the above picture – in New Look’s Dubai Mall changing room:

And a pair of suede-effect high black mules (pictured further down in this post)

I am also on the lookout for a replacement cotton scarf I once owned. I purchased it from ASOS.com about three years ago. It was red with Alexander McQueen style skulls on it.
…I see a trend appearing in this post; however you know from previous posts that he is…Was, one of my favourite designers. Such wonderful and edgy designs. So wearable.
So I am on the market to replace this once overly-worn scarf.
I saw a potential replacement in TopShop; however it was peachy in tone and had velvet-effect lining and cut-out skulls on it. Not what I am after. A pop of colour! And it would also go nicely with the red nails I mentioned about in my previous post today.

I am still looking for a nice pair of smart black trousers, and darkish gray ones while I’m at it. I’m after flared ones, low waisted/rise. Even normal waisted.
I am over Skinny jeans; I need more than Bootcut; I crave Flares!

I saw this golden and satin flower clutch near the till at New Look in The Dubai Mall on the way out last weekend, had to prize my feet from being stuck on the floor and exit swiftly before I marched right back to the counter and grabbed it!
It was bigger than how it looks in this picture, and I definitely prefer it as a clutch opposed to on a chain as a crossover.
It’s not a habit of mine to like flowery things, but this definitely won me over!

Office wear haul

H&M, Ibn Battuta Mall
Grey high-waisted pencil skirt, with skinny patent black belt detail – 148dhs

Misc. sportswear store, Mirdif Mall
Black (slightly bigger size than usually buy to it doesn’t wrinkle when sit and isn’t tight) muscle-vest (usual gym attire) tucked in. Purchased from a gym shop – 120dhs

New Look, Ibn Battuta Mall
black suede-effect mules – 200dhs

I also picked up some fantastic blazers from H&M:

Black blazer with flower detail inside

Bow detail on pockets

Grey blazer with lovely back detail

Blazer with almost swing-jacket effect and hook closure, pink lining and high back

White shirt, sleeveless with large bow detail on chest. Perfect for wearing with high-waisted pencil skirts!

Black shirt, sleeveless with large bow detail on chest. I also purchased a band on trend midi-high-waisted black skirt with bow detail around the waist, it’s massively flared, it reminds me of an old fashioned witches skirt, and looks really cool with this black shirt as looks like a dress! To be even more this season, teaming it with a white three-quarter-sleeve shirt would create the monochrome look that’s all the rage right now. But I can’t help but think of Olsen attire when I envision it together.
I’ll have to really experiment with this skirt; especially being 5″3, it’s going to shortened the appearance of my legs.
I think I’ll keep my eye out for a smart-casual maxi-skirt to wear in the office. That wold definitely look nice with flats and wouldn’t create a ‘cankles’ look.

I will mix colours with these gray and black tones, such as a bright green cardigan I found at Forever 21 a couple of months ago, and separately a pair of flat patent blue pumps (the same colour as my blue nail varnish) to brighten the outfit.

…Still keeping my eye out for that skull scarf though
Haha, we’re never happy are we! ;)

Nails!

18 Jul

Yes! I am SO into nail varnishes right now it’s crazy!

My love of experimenting with colourful nail varnishes started up again when my fella got me a whole buncha’ different colours for my birthday!
Such treats for my eyes, I couldn’t try them all out at the same time fast enough!

His current fav’s on me are the yellow and the bright blue. He says they are ‘super hero-esque’ colours, and I can’t argue with that! When I saw these two shades I straight away said ‘The Watchmen colours’! I think that got me bonus points ;)

I surprisingly quite like a very pale blue out of the set too. At first it was a little too bright light; almost like Tipex. But after a few hours of wearing it, it grew on me, and now I think it’s quite feminine.
At first I thought it might not be very flattering becuase I have a pale skintone which can look quite drained against certain colours, but I think it can actually make a skin tone look more tanned:

To achieve a different look, I tested out using a bright yellow as a base colour before applying the pale blue (be sure to completely cover the base colour!…Unless you’re using a ‘crackle’ effect varnish).
I think it worked quite well actually. It seems to have given a slightly different shade and it appears thicker and more matte, which I like:

I try to wear this colour nail varnish with light coloured attire. I’ve noticed that it looks kind of cheap when paired with darks. Even with a plain white vest top can look casual but part of the ‘Romantic’ trend. Oooh – with a floaty maxi-skirt and a delicate decorated but chunky clutch: now that’s pre-planning!…Just need to get the maxi…And clutch…And…Oh bother.

I’ve never worn bright red nail varnish before; only perhaps once as a child from one of those dress-up makeup sets. But as a teenager upwards, I’ve not dared to wear it.
As soon as I painted my first nail, even the first coat; the colour just popped! I love to wear it with a black blazer outfit; usually with jeans and a funky; but fairly plain tee underneath.

This month I have tested out the following colours from Nailstation Paris:

BabyDoll – a pale pink, that needs around 4 layers in order to build up a nice colour! But it’s a very subtle shade that is good for formal meetings.
Aquamarine/Juicy Gossip: A gorgeous favourite of mine that I used up in the first month of owning it! It goes with so many outfits, and got many comments!
Dating Scene: A real eye-popping shade of red! Looks great with suits, especially black.
Confidentiel – a gorgeous shade of yellow, so summery and funky!
Cartoon Cute – a cool pea green tone that appears risky when in the pot, but when doubled up on layers, it really stands out!
Girlfriend – bright pink tone, so feminine and pretty! Don’t wear with purple!

Skinny Jeans

31 Mar

This is me. This are my Skinny Jeans.

Or should I say, ‘was’ about 1 month ago.

“Hello Skinny Jeans” I excited squeak, grabbing them fresh from the wardrobe and thrusting them upon the bed, ready to pluck the rest of my outfit together and chuck it on for the day.
“Oh…Hello…It’s you” Skinny Jean(s) reply in an almost avoidant tone.

I am confused somewhat as to Skinny Jean(s) retort and attitude towards me…That is, until I attempt to pull them up.

Oh my.

It seems that today being Day 16 of my smoking cessation, has affected my waist-line…And bum-line…And thigh-line, if there is such a thing. That as well as changing monthly ‘lady’ pills; which most women know can be a nightmare, especially if you get the wrong brand for you and your body.
Quick change of subject but I tried out ‘Yasmin’ once…Oh sweet baby Jesus, I was turned into a mean(er), paranoid, bitch version of myself. Nevertheless, it’s been an interesting month thus far, not a complete delight – coupled with work being busy, etc; but if you’re going to do something, you might as well jump in head first and do it with your all!

I make myself feel better temporarily by reminding myself that at least this gain in water retention and weight is temporary, better than filling my lungs with tar and nicotine, and at least doesn’t smell horrible!

As anyone who has given up smoking knows, it is extremely challenging and difficult, and each day brings with it new challenges to which I consciously must tell myself “No!”. This is the second time I have attempted to be a non-smoker. The first time ended after about 6 months. I thought the cravings would have more than completely died a death by 6 months, surely?! But nope, they didn’t – not for me at least, and not at that particular point in time.

I must say though, I do feel stronger this time. I consciously picked up my purse, left the office, got in the elevator, walked to the Pharmacy, and picked up a pack of 20mg Nicotinel patches (1 new one every 24 hours – which means I sleep with one on, and subsequently get the craziest dreams!), the medium strength ones in the set.

The first time I had given up, I went completely ‘cold turkey’, nothing for 6 months. But I came to the conclusion, that even thought I was determined and strong-willed…I still gave in to NOT giving up. And I want this tie to be different, I honestly do.
I researched quite a lot on smoking cessation, the reasoning behind giving up, pro’s and con’s…No pro’s of course in reality, read about other people who had given up, tried to find relation in some articles, watched YouTube videos on documentaries and adverts on why smokers should throw their ‘death sticks’ away and start afresh. But most of all, and most importantly, I feel – I knew in my heart and head that I was ready to stop…To just stop.

For someone, who unfortunately has smoked continuously for around 13 years (!?), on around 8-20 cigs a day, and actually really enjoys smoking, it is difficult, but risking my ‘waistline’ in the short-term (as I have been snacking on rubbish lately) for being a non-smoker long-term, is worth it.

I realise it’s not glamourous, it doesn’t make us who or indeed what we are. However I believe it has been somewhat of a crutch for me, socially and mentally.
Having smoked for all of my teenage years, the most awkward era of a person’s life, they had become a reliable ‘friend’, someone who I could relax with, feel at ease and comfortable with, someone who was always there and made me feel better when I was stressed out.

But in reality:

And most importantly…
